The Maya wall paintings from Chajul, Guatemala

2020

The recent renovation of a house in Chajul in western Guatemala has revealed an unparalleled set of wall paintings, most probably from the Colonial period (AD 1524–1821). The iconography of the murals combines pre-Columbian elements with imported European components in a domestic rather than a religious setting, making them a unique example of Colonial-period art. Here, the authors present the results of iconographic, chemical and radiocarbon analyses of the Chajul house paintings. Dating to the seventeenth to eighteenth centuries AD, the paintings may be connected to a revival of the local religious organisation (cofradías) in the context of waning Spanish colonial control.

Origins, Journey, and Home: The Issue of Identity in the Work of Three Diasporic “African-Indian” Women Writers

2014

This chapter considers the issue of identity in postcolonial literature. It challenges the representations of center/metropolis and margin/periphery as a one-to-one link. The three writers considered here are located within a context of intra-colonial displacements from India. Ananda Devi, Natacha Appanah, and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown offer a blurred vision of identity, and share some important common points: the three of them define the identity as fluid and multiple. The identities they speak about are the results of a personal negotiation with numerous and diversified external stimuli. Finally, they show a similar relationship with the themes of the origins, journey, and “home”.

The local appropriation of democracy: an analysis of the municipal elections in Parakou, Republic of Benin, 2002–03

2006

Ever since the ‘democratic renewal’ of 1989–90, Benin has been regarded as a model democracy in the African context. The holding of local elections in 2002–03 can be seen as the culmination of this turn to democracy. Donors attach high expectations to decentralisation and local democracy. Based on an empirical analysis of municipal elections in Parakou, the country's third-largest city, the paper tries to gauge whether these expectations have been realised. The paper argues that while multi-party democracy has been instituted under considerable pressure from the outside, the particular form it has taken derives instead from rationales of national and local politics which go back to the late…
